Zappa Cliniquez was formed in 1994 when
percussionist/drummer Klas
Assarson (Isildurs Bane) and keyboard player Anders Häggebrant performed the Frank Zappa
song "The Black Page" as Klas´ final exam at university.
This musical ordeal turned out really well and Anders and Klas decided
to take it one step further. Bass player Tony Jenhed was recruited and the trio took FZ´s delicate combination of notes on the road. Several mini concert- and clinic tours around Sweden followed. In the spring of 1998 the Zappa Cliniquez was extended into a quartet with guitar player Mattias "IA" Eklundh (Freak Kitchen). An audience battered on a daily basis with Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys, not likely to get in touch with pieces like "Purple Lagoon" or "Manx Need Woman", but who at least deserve a fair chance to know that it exists. Until now, all the songs performed by the Zappa Cliniquez have been based on Frank Zappa´s instrumentals, or, as "Inca Roads" for example, songs that have been recorded both with and without vocals. Recently Mattias grabbed the microphone and sang "Bamboozled by Love" and "The Dangerous Kitchen" and this seemed pretty appreciated from the audience; a little "ventilation for the soul" in a somewhat heavy repertoire. |
